My Story…
The first time my parents took me to a doctor to help with my migraines was in high school. Other family members battle with chronic headaches and migraines, too.
This only got worse for me as I got older, with an uptick in headaches and migraines with each of my concussions. Dark rooms, ice packs and hours of silence were my primary treatment.
Although migraines don't always cause headache pain, these can be disabling in other ways. For instance, when I had Covid in 2022, the vertigo and spatial disorientation from a vestibular migraine caused me to fall. I didn't have a headache until then -- when I broke my jaw broke in two places.
According to the American Headache Society, migraine pain is the 5th most common reason for emergency department visits. Roughly 40% of people who suffer from migraines are unemployed because of their condition.
I am so grateful for the relief that headache medication, botox injections, biofeedback and other interventions have brought me. With the help of these treatments I have been mostly migraine-free for over fifteen years.
Unfortunately the hormonal changes of peri-menopause have awakened the headache and migraine beast, but I remain hopeful that co-ordinated treatment between my neurologist and primary care doctor will bring me more consistent pain-free days again!
Please help support migraine research to bring relief to those suffering from a very painful and chronic condition. Thank you!!
